The picture, song, and writing on this page all make me happy. They are able to illicit a sense of euphoria from me that little else can. I know that there are many who are constantly wishing for more, but my wishes are more mundane. There is something in Billy Collin's poetry that captures that sense, the feeling that happiness is right there all you need to do is look more closely at what you are holding in your hand or what you're listening to.
Too often we are searching for happiness in the most obscure places. And why is that human nature forces us to constantly question our happiness once it is attained? Is it so hard to believe that happiness is attainable?
The Pound and Ginsberg excerpts show two different sides of American poetry. When I was younger I only liked reading women poets, I thought their work had more emotion. But as I got older I realized that there were hundreds of American poets, both male and female, who can capture emotion in their poetry in a really amazing way.
Today I think some of the best "poetry" being written is by songwriters. They can do amazing things with cadence and rhythm which is sometimes lost in the spoken word. Death Cab for Cutie (despite the bizarre name) writes and sings really beautiful songs which show a slightly younger side of America art. Most of the artists throughout my museum are older or from different time periods, but Death Cab is from my own generation and I think they capture how a lot of young people in America feel today about a variety of topics.
